If you are soon headed to the Costa Brava, here are some of the best things to do in Begur and the surrounding area.

Last summer, we had a wonderful family holiday in Begur, Costa Brava. You can check out my article all about our holiday here.

Things to do in Begur

Begur’s central location makes it an ideal jumping off point for many must-see towns and beaches in Costa Brava. Check out these spectacular suggestions for day trips from Begur:

Visit a medieval town

You are spoilt for choice in terms of little medieval towns in the Begur area.

Around every corner holds a charming sight – think picture-perfect cobbled streets and pretty greenery at every turn.

Begur’s towns are small enough to fully explore within an hour or two, and the town squares are a great place to grab a drink and watch the world go by.

Begur Old Town

Climb the hill in the historic centre of Begur old town and explore the medieval castle ruins. (Note: you can park close to the top if you don’t fancy the walk up the hill from the town centre)

Visit Begur’s rainbow coloured steps

The town of Begur is also home to these fun rainbow coloured steps.

Castell de Begur

Climb up the hill in Begur Old Town to the remains of this 16th-century fort with panoramic views of the sea and town below.

Pals

Like many of the medieval towns in the Begur area, Pals is no exception. A charming town with its cobbled streets, craft shops, traditional restaurants and bars.

Peratallada

Peratallada

You can still see the remains of the fortress and moat surrounding the medieval town of Peratallada.

We sampled a fair bit of ice cream in Begur, but none as good as Gelat Artesa ice cream in Peratallada – we may have visited Peratallada on more than one occasion JUST to get an ice cream ; )

This beautiful town with fabulous ice cream should definitely be on your list of things to do in Begur.

Can Padres

If you are into rotisserie chicken and chips, a visit to Can Padres is a must.

Situated on the outskirts of the medieval town of Pals, we loved this unassuming yet charming eatery with it’s canteen style tables nestled amongst a canopy of trees. We’ve heard Can Padres gets busy, but we ate here twice during the lunchtime rush and had no trouble getting a table.

Tamariu’s seafront restaurants

Every seafood meal we ate during our Costa Brava holiday was amazing, but we had a particularly lovely time eating at Tamariu’s seafront restaurants. The harbour and waterfront is smaller than Llafranc which lends a more intimate vibe.

Toc Al Mar at Aigua Blava

If you are visiting the beach at Aigua Blava (more details on that beach further on in this post), we highly recommend the Toc Al Mar restaurant on the beachfront.

It is advisable to book ahead for Toc Al Mar during peak season.

I’m still thinking about the paella we had at Toc Al Mar.

Walk from Sa Tuna to S’Eixugador

To the right of Sa Tuna beach (if you are facing the sea) there is a path that will take you along a pine forest that leads to a cliff top and then back down to a tiny, lesser explored cove called S’Eixugador.

The last stretch to reach the cove involves a bit of clambering, and it can be challenging if you have little ones or less mobile people in your group. Our youngest travelled in a sling and we found it fine.

But even if you don’t go all the way down to the cove, an absolute must do is to walk along the cliff top part. You’ll be treated to some spectacular views of the mediterranean sea from above.

Experience the view from El Far de San Sebastia

Speaking of views, another one not to miss is the view from El Far de San Sebastia (The lighthouse of San Sebastian). There is a lookout point with a magnificent view over the bay of Llanfranc.

Far Nomo

Just over the road from El Far de San Sebastia is Far Nomo – a trendy bar and restaurant with panoramic views. We had drinks here a couple of times whilst we watched the sun set over Llafranc.

Cap Roig Botanical Gardens

Situated on a cliff top with stunning views of the bays below, I would highly recommend a visit to the beautiful Botanical Gardens of Cap Roig.

Good news if you are visiting with young children – there is a playground at Cap Roig Botanical Gardens.

The best beaches near Begur

You are spoilt for choice for beautiful beaches if you are staying in the Begur area of Costa Brava, and the best part is that they are all within a 20 minute drive away from Begur town.

We couldn’t pick a favourite beach, but we did find that each of the beaches we visited catered for slightly different requirements, so I thought it might be useful to list a brief description of each beach we visited below:

Sa Tuna

Llafranc

Medium sized sandy beach (larger than Tamariu, Sa Tuna or Sa Riera) with quaint seaside town feel

Tamariu

Small cove in a picturesque horseshoe shape

Sa Tuna

Small beach surrounded by pretty houses and a spectacular cliff top walk

Sa Riera Beach

A longer, more spacious beach than most in the area

Playa de AiguaBlava

One of the smallest coves in the Begur area. We loved it’s more intimate feel. Get there early as it fills up quickly.

Calella de Palafrugell

Nestled between the botanical garden at Cap Roig and El Far de San Sebastian, Calella de Palafrugell is a cluster of beaches. There’s the main town beach with playground, and some quiter .beaches either side

Platja Fonda

The hidden gem of Platja Fonda offers a serene escape thanks to its somewhat secluded location. Accessible solely through a coastal trail, reaching it requires descending a steep flight of stairs.

Pals beach

Unlike the smaller coves above, this beach is a huge wide stretch of sand. If you want space to spread out and play beach games, Pals beach has a 3 mile expanse of sand.

Older children and teenagers will love the inflatable play park in the water.

Pals beach costa brava

If you are visiting Begur Costa Brava in the summer months it is worth noting that you will have to be up and out early in order to score a parking space at one of these beaches.

The car parks aren’t large, and they do fill up very early on. We visited in August and found that if we were there before 10am, we usually found a space.

We absolutely loved this charming area of the Costa Brava. Begur and the surrounding areas are a great family holiday destination. See why we think Begur is one of the best places to visit in my article on Begur for families.

There are so many things to do in Begur and so many beautiful sights to see. We would jump at the chance to go back to Begur one day!

Whenever you visit Castell De Begur do enjoying sitting on the top of hill. This will give you an amazing view over the whole city which is breathtaking. The fort that is built on the top of the hill has an amazing basement and you can view whole of the city from the top.
