The first time I visited Vienna was years ago, and it was during the festive season. We joined a guided tour, and even though it was just a day trip, we had an amazing time – despite the pretty cold weather.

So even Vienna is a great place to visit anytime, if you want to choose the best timing for your first trip, I would definitely suggest going for the Advent season, with the Christmas lights and the smell of mulled wine and roasted chestnut in the air… I think December is the best time to enjoy this beautiful city!

Vienna is a fantastic choice to visit in December for a bunch of magical reasons (and by the way, quite easy to reach due to its central location in Europe).
One of the highlights is undoubtedly the amazing Christmas markets that fill up with Christmas lights in the city’s historic squares and streets. The markets at Rathausplatz, Schönbrunn, and Belvedere Palace are like tiny (and not so tiny) festive villages, offering traditional crafts, seasonal treats, and a warm, joyful atmosphere (including even an incredible ice skating rink!).
The city itself transforms into a winter wonderland with its iconic sights, including St. Stephen’s Cathedral, which is beautifully illuminated with festive lights. The imperial palaces, such as Schönbrunn and Belvedere, make you feel like you’re in a fairy tale whenever you visit them, but in winter, with their gardens and holiday lights, they are truly magical!
Vienna is one of the capitals of classical music, and in December, you can choose from various special concerts and performances in beautiful venues like the Musikverein and the Vienna State Opera. Vienna’s coffeehouse culture adds a cozy touch, inviting visitors to warm up with hot beverages and delicious pastries – as the weather can be quite chilly, on our first trip we checked quite a few of the coffeehouses to have a break in our sightseeing and to defrost our hands and feet.

1. Enjoy Vienna’s Christmas Markets
Did you know that there are several Christmas markets all over Vienna during the festive season? Well, it can be pretty challenging to try visiting all in one day, but you can pick from this list the ones that fit you the best! The good news is that some are just within walking distance from each other.
Hint: we got a traditional paper map and just circled all the markets to figure out how to visit most of them without having to go back and forth, it was fun to see it instead of our mobile phones.
Rathausplatz (City Hall Square):
The Vienna Christmas Market at Rathausplatz is one of the most famous and expansive markets in the city. And one of the best Christmas Markets I have ever been to! The Rathaus itself is beautifully illuminated, and the market features numerous stalls offering crafts, gifts, and delicious treats.

Christmas Village at Maria-Theresien-Platz:
Located between the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Naturhistorisches Museum, this Christmas village features stalls with arts, crafts, and culinary delights. The area is beautifully lit, creating a festive atmosphere.

Christmas Village at Belvedere Palace:

Last time, we “got lost” in the Gardens of Schönbrunn with my Daughter while searching for the “Labyrinth”… she still reminds me from time to time that we got lost while we were searching for the place where we can get lost… Anyway, if you are traveling with kids in a bit warmer weather, the “Schönbrunn Maze” can be a great addition to your walks in the gardens (especially if you can find it ), and there is a little playground right next to it as well!

Karlsplatz hosts the Art Advent Christmas market, emphasizing handmade arts and crafts. The market also includes cultural events, live music, and a festive atmosphere.

The Prater in Vienna is a perfect place to go if you are traveling with kids. It is a sort of amusement park with lots of adventure rides (you can find some great ones for all ages – and all level of courage ), musical live performances during the Christmas season, and the iconic Ferris Wheel!

2. Try out Ice Skating
If you would like to enjoy Vienna’s amazing Christmas decorations still in the city center but from a bit unusual perspective, check out one of its ice rinks! Ice skating is a great way to experience the magical atmosphere and have fun with your loved ones (I can not do any ice skating without someone holding my hand, so this sport is always a sort of bonding activity for us ).
Vienna Ice Dream at the Town Hall Square:
From November to March, you can enjoy ice skating in front of the City Hall! With its over 9,000 m² (96.875 sq ft) large ice rink, it is a perfect spot with four large rinks and romantic paths for all the families. It is truly amazing!
Ice Skating at Alte Donau:
If you are looking for a really unique experience, you can practice ice skating at Alte Donau (Old Danube), a frozen section of the Danube River.
3. Visit Schönbrunn ZOO
Schönbrunn Zoo, nestled within the gardens of Schönbrunn Palace, is a fantastic family-friendly destination that offers a unique and delightful experience in winter.
While you may associate zoos primarily with warmer seasons, Schönbrunn Zoo proves to be a year-round gem. In winter, the atmosphere is calm, and the crisp air adds a refreshing touch to your visit. The animals, accustomed to the cooler temperatures, are often more active, providing an excellent opportunity to observe their natural behaviors. The magical setting, surrounded by the historic palace and its gardens, creates a unique background for your exploration.
The absence of large crowds allows for a more intimate experience, as you wander through the well-designed enclosures and discover the diverse array of wildlife. For the second year in a row we tend to visit ZOOs in winter with my Daughter, and we really enjoy these short trips! Whether you’re captivated by the playfulness of the polar bears or the grace of the winter-adapted animals, Schönbrunn Zoo in winter offers a unique and calm escape with some Christmas spirit for nature enthusiasts and families.
4. Discover the Magic of Schönbrunn Palace
If you already visited the Scönbrunn Christmas Market, the park, and the ZOO, you might want to get a bit inside for some warmth.
Schönbrunn Palace is one of Austria’s most important cultural assets, and one of its major tourist attractions, drawing millions of visitors each year. It is also a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, and in any way, an amazing place to visit!
It is like a fairytale castle surrounded by beautiful gardens. It used to be the summer home for the royal Habsburg family. The palace looks beautiful with its Baroque design, big gardens, and a cool structure called the Gloriette on a hill. Inside, you can explore gorgeous rooms like the Great Gallery and see where Empress Maria Theresa lived. Visiting Schönbrunn Palace is like taking a step back in time to a place where kings and queens used to live in luxury and style.
Schonbrunn Palace offers several different tours and exhibitions to choose from:
- Imperial Tour (appr. 40 min)
- The Grand Tour (appr. 60 min)
- State Apartments (appr. 25 min)

- Children’s Museum
Our favorite was the Children’s Museum on the right side of the Palace. We could dress in traditional dresses as Austrian royals, take photos, and enjoy the games little ones played centuries ago. As the Children’s Museum is within the Palace, we also had the chance to experience the atmosphere and enjoy the beautiful rooms and furniture displayed.
Hint: if you go to the Children’s Museum, you do not have to wait in the queue at the main entrance! We waited there just to realize that it was possible to buy our tickets at the Children’s Museum entrance directly… And of course, you can buy your tickets online too.
5. Explore the Museums of Vienna
One of our favorite things to do is visit museums – especially during the winter months. This is the best way to learn about culture, history, and nature, in a warm environment during colder months. It can be a great idea when planning your trip to include some short museum visits between the outdoor programs planned!
Belvedere Palace:
Explore the Belvedere Palace, known for its impressive art collection (including masterpieces from Gustav Klimt!). The palace and gardens take on a special charm during the holiday season, making it a delightful place to visit.
Actually, the Belvedere Palace is comprised of two palaces, the Upper and Lower Belvedere. This historic complex is a masterpiece designed by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt in the 18th century. The Upper Belvedere, with its iconic Baroque architecture, houses an impressive collection of Austrian art, including works by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Oskar Kokoschka.
The Lower Belvedere features stunning ceremonial rooms and serves as a venue for various exhibitions and events. The palace grounds, with sculptures and fountains, provide a calm escape.

Kunst Haus Wien:
I love the works of Friedensreich Hundertwasser, and the Kunst Haus Wien is just amazing! The whole building is very characteristic, you can find various materials used all over the place including glass, metal, bricks, wood, and ceramic tiles. Since 1991, you can find permanent Hundertwasser exhibition on two floors and on two other floors changing exhibitions.
Hofburg Palace:
Visit the Hofburg Palace and the Imperial Apartments. During December, the palace is often full of festive decorations, and you can get engaged in the history of the Habsburgs.
This palace complex, with its diverse architectural styles spanning from Gothic to Baroque, served as the imperial residence for the Habsburg dynasty for over six centuries. Today, it houses a lot of museums, including the Imperial Apartments, the Sisi Museum, and the Silver Collection, offering a captivating glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of Austrian royalty.

Hint: during our last visit to Vienna, our favorite was the Natural History Museum, which is in the city centre, right next to the Hofburg. It is not an extremely big building, but it has many treasures to offer, and interactive displays make it even more fun for kids! Spoiler: there is a real dinosaur bone that visitors are encouraged to touch!
6. Get a Hot Chocolate in One of the Viennese Coffee Houses

In the city centre, next to the Mariahilfer Strasse, you can enjoy the great mix of traditions with a special charm in Café Jelinek.

Travel Information
Austria has a central location in Europe, making it easy to reach its capital either by car, train or plane.
Vienna International Airport is located in Schwechat, 18 km (11 mi) southeast of central Vienna.
The city has 4 train stations:
- Vienna Main Station (Wien Hauptbahnhof), which is a modern and important national and international transportation hub;
- Wien-Meidling Station;
- Westbahnhof;
- Wien Mitte Station.
All are well-connected by various public transport lines – including subways – making it easy to reach your destination.
Parking within the city centre is not that easy, but huge parking lots are built around the centre, serving as P+R hubs for visitors.
As public transportation is pretty easy and well-connected, even visitors arriving by car should consider leaving their cars outside the main tourist areas.
Hint: during our last trip we used the Vienna City Card, which gave us various discounts at museums and we could also use public transport free of charge!
