Important Things to Consider when Creating your Dream Bathroom

Transforming your bathroom involves more than just picking out tiles and stylish fixtures. You need to balance aesthetics with practicality to ensure it looks and works as you want it to for as long as possible. The smallest details can make a huge difference, so pay attention to these key elements when creating your dream bathroom for a space that’s as durable as it is beautiful.

  • Waterproofing

It sounds obvious, but this should be a priority when renovating your bathroom. Heat and humidity and regular splashes make bathrooms especially prone to water damage like mould, one of the reasons why carpet is so controversial for the flooring.

Always lay waterproof membranes beneath tiles, especially in wet areas like the shower or bath enclosure. These form a protective barrier, helping to prevent water from seeping into the walls or floor, which ultimately would require costly repairs. Consider using moisture-resistant paints or vapour barriers on walls, especially in areas where water exposure is frequent. Proper waterproofing safeguards your home’s structural integrity and will help ensure the longevity of your finishes without maintenance.

  • Ventilation

Lingering steam can contribute to dampness and the associated unpleasant, musty smell, so it’s essential to have a good ventilation system in place.

An extractor fan can help, but don’t be tempted to go for the cheaper models as these are usually ineffective. Look for one that’s powerful enough to remove moisture from the air quickly, without being too noisy. Some are adjustable, becoming more powerful when humidity levels rise. If possible, keep air bricks in the walls and always include an openable window in bathroom designs.

  • Materials

Choosing the right materials is critical for the look and durability of your bathroom. They should be able to withstand high humidity and the wear and tear of daily use while having a beautiful finish.

You’ll want to focus on materials that can withstand high humidity and the wear and tear of daily use. Opt for tiles with non-porous surfaces for the walls and floors: ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone tiles are all easy-clean options.

Top tip for tile maintenance: Grout lines in particular can harbour dirt and grime, so go for larger tiles with fewer seams or use grout sealant to prevent staining.

Consider quartz or granite, or marble if you want a luxury look, for countertops. These attractive materials are hardwearing and moisture-resistant, so should look as good as new for years. Avoid wood or MDF, especially for cupboards, as they tend to swell and deteriorate when exposed to moisture over time.

  • Fixtures & Fittings

Choosing the right fixtures and fittings is another balancing act between style and practicality. Bear in mind that they dictate functional aspects such as water usage and your options for bathing and avoid choosing on appearance alone. For example, a wet room is a striking feature but doesn’t have the flexibility of a bath with overhead shower.

When you’re browsing bathroom taps for sale, look for water-saving options to keep your usage low. Touchless taps are effortlessly chic, or you can go for a more traditional design with an in-built aerator or flow-limiter. Similarly, adjustable showerheads help you regulate flow better than a rain shower. Having accurate temperature control is important too, for your bills and importantly your comfort!

  • Lighting

The bathroom functions as a place of relaxation and preparation, so you need a layered lighting scheme that ensures excellent visibility and a soothing ambience as and when needed. Instead of relying solely on overhead lighting, balance task lighting near the mirror with softer side lights around the bath and shower. Remember to choose fixtures and bulbs resistant to water damage.

Dimmable bulbs will help you light your bathroom like a spa, letting you set the mood at any time of day. Warm white lights are best for a cosy, calming feel, while cool white lights are more glamorous. You could even integrate coloured bulbs around the shower for an elevated experience. As with any room, natural light is a bonus, so use blinds around the window so you can let in the right amount.
