From layers to footwear: A practical guide to women’s hiking clothing

Nothing beats a good hike. Whether a short walk through the Peak District or a day exploring the Scottish Highlands, you come back feeling both energised and grounded. But the experience can become uncomfortable if you are not dressed for the conditions. The good news is that outdoor clothing has evolved rapidly. You can find fabrics that regulate temperature, manage moisture, and help you cope with unpredictable weather – which makes a big difference in the UK, where sunshine can turn to wind and rain within the hour. From learning to layer effectively through to choosing the right outerwear, read on to discover how to build a practical hiking outfit that balances comfort, durability, and performance.

Base layers: The foundation of comfort during your hike

Base layers sit closest to the skin and play a key role in regulating body temperature by wicking moisture away from the body while maintaining warmth if its cold. Modern base layers are breathable and lightweight, so sweat will evaporate quickly (you won’t get the ‘chilling’ effect of damp clothing. Opt for merino wool if you want natural temperature regulation. Though synthetic fabrics are still popular since they’re durable and dry quickly. Recent developments in outdoor gear have introduced adaptive fabrics that actually respond to changes in your body temperature as you go over different terrain – increasing airflow when you warm up during steep climbs and retaining warmth when you slow down.

Mid layers: Get the right balance of warmth and breathability

The mid layer provides insulation by trapping heat while still allowing moisture to escape. In an unpredictable climate, this means the difference between being comfortable and feeling chilled halfway through your walk. If you’re looking for something lightweight and breathable, fleece jackets are a good choice and these days they often include ‘grid fleece’ (or the more innovative Octa Fleece) structures that keep you warm without looking bulky. Long-haul hikers are also looking to lightweight synthetic insulated pull-ons that provide impressive warmth without feeling heavy or restricting movement.

Modern outerwear: Waterproofs, wind protection and shells

You definitely need a reliable outer layer if you hike in the UK. The forecast can instantly shift to wind and rain (especially if you walk in upland areas). Technical shells block wind and keep water out while allowing moisture to escape from inside the garment. Modern designs focus on breathability and durability, so you stay comfortable during both steady walks and demanding climbs. You can choose from a range of women’s jackets designed for the outdoors that feature adjustable hoods, ventilation zips, and tailored cuts that allow freedom of movement on the trail while looking stylish.

Trousers, footwear and accessories for any weather and terrain

Don’t forget about the rest of your hiking outfit. Walking trousers made of stretch fabrics allow you to move easily when climbing or navigating uneven paths. Good footwear is critical. Get supportive hiking boots with good grip to protect your ankles and keep you stable as you navigate rocky or muddy ground. Moisture-wicking socks will prevent blisters, and lightweight gloves and hats provide warmth in cooler temperatures.

Create the ideal hiking outfit for changing conditions

Before you set out on your hike, it’s worth taking the time to make a few smart clothing choices. This way, you can focus on the landscape rather than the everchanging weather.
