Best comedy movies for tweens

Finding genuinely funny films for tweens can be harder than it sounds.

At this age, they’re often past simple kids’ films, but not quite ready for older teen humour. What works best is something in the middle. Films that are actually funny, not too babyish, and still feel appropriate for 8–12 year olds.

This list is based on what has worked well in our house, with a mix of laugh-out-loud comedies, slightly chaotic adventures, and films that parents will happily sit through too.

If you’re looking for something more action-heavy, you might also like my guide to the best action and adventure movies for tweens.

What makes a good comedy for tweens?

Comedy for this age group is quite specific.

The films that tend to land best usually have:

  • Fast-paced, obvious humour
  • Relatable characters around a similar age
  • Enough story to keep them engaged
  • Jokes that work on two levels (for kids and adults)
  • Nothing too awkward, rude, or confusing

Some classic children’s comedies can feel too young by this stage, while teen comedies can feel a bit too grown up. The sweet spot is somewhere in between.

Quick picks: best comedy movies for tweens

If you just want a few reliable options, these are consistently popular:

  • Paddington 2
  • School of Rock
  • Night at the Museum
  • Mrs Doubtfire
  • Johnny English
  • Matilda the Musical
  • Diary of a Wimpy Kid
  • The Parent Trap
  • Galaxy Quest
  • Cheaper by the Dozen

Best funny movies for 8–12 year olds

Some of these are perfect for younger tweens, while others are better suited to the 10–12 range, depending on what you’re comfortable with.

Mrs Doubtfire

Best for: older tweens (10–12)
Funny, slightly chaotic, and surprisingly emotional. The humour works for tweens, but there’s enough depth to keep adults invested too.

Comedy movies for tweens that parents will enjoy too

Some of these are genuinely enjoyable for everyone, not just something to sit through.

If you’re watching together, these tend to work especially well:

  • Paddington 2
  • Mrs Doubtfire
  • School of Rock
  • Night at the Museum
  • Galaxy Quest

Where to watch these movies in the UK

Availability changes often, but most of these films can usually be found on:

  • Netflix
  • Disney+
  • Amazon Prime Video
  • Sky / NOW

It’s always worth checking JustWatch to see where they’re currently streaming.

Final thoughts

Finding films that genuinely work for tweens can take a bit of trial and error, especially as they start to outgrow younger children’s films but aren’t quite ready for teen content.

Hopefully this list gives you a mix of easy wins and a few new ideas to try. And if nothing else, it should save you scrolling through streaming platforms trying to find something that everyone agrees on.
