Sam and I haven’t done the wedding thing yet. One day, I think we would like to celebrate our relationship with our friends and family, and the benefit of having children beforehand is that they can be a key part of the celebrations too. I already have my own ideas for how I would like to include my children in a wedding, but here are some tips brought to you by weddingsite.co.uk

If you already have a family together and you decide to get hitched, then there are plenty of ways to include your loved ones in your wedding. Here’s a guide to how to include children of all ages up to the age of 18 in the memorable wedding of their parents and how to make them feel occupied and needed. For the younger ones, we will give you some suggestions on how to make sure that they are not running around causing total chaos but instead remain a pleasure to have mingling among the adults.

Serve food tailored towards young palates

You’ve decided that you’re definitely going to have young children at your wedding. Your own brood will be there, of course, as well as the offspring of your friends and other people in your family. The best thing to do is to make sure that there is a kids menu that the little ones are going to feel comfortable eating whilst the grown-ups tuck into their posh wedding meal. It’s also a good idea to seat the very young ones (aged 10 and lower) at a separate table from their parents so that everyone can enjoy an age appropriate party experience!

Give everyone a role in the wedding

When deciding the role that your children are going to play, you can take your pick from a large variety of roles for both boys and girls. Ring bearer and flower girl roles are standard, but you can also ask your children to do a special reading or performance before the ceremony. This goes down very well usually and causes a few of the grown-ups to dab at their eyes with their handkerchief. Other ideas are asking your kids to hand out the ceremony program, confetti, help your guests to get seated or handout favours and gifts.

Taking that all-important family photo

The best thing is that you’re already a family, so make the most of the day and include your children in a special photo shoot with yourself and your partner. Choose a location that makes setting up everyone in the right position easy. If you have very small children, a lovely idea is just to have the baby on your lap, or sit on the ground as a couple with the baby. Another idea is to choose a tree (low to the ground) and have the whole gang perch in the branches. Remember to have fun and not to stress too much–this day is for enjoying.

We hope that gave you some useful ideas to plan your wedding day around your family, and if you need more inspiration, weddingsite.co.uk is always happy to help. The most important part is to keep everyone involved and keep spirits up during what could be a very long and stressful day for everyone involved. If you are including your own children in the ceremony then the best thing to do is to give them their own chance to shine and show how they feel about their family. Good luck and let us know how it goes!
