For most people, the bathroom is one of the most important areas in the home.

It tends to function as a particularly strong part of the home thematically, and it is also clearly a very important functional room for many reasons too. Clearly, the happier you are with your bathroom, the happier you are likely to be with the home in general. But if you are not entirely happy with your bathroom then what are some of the things you can do? As it happens, there are plenty of changes you can make – some small, and some more significant – which are likely to result in a better bathroom, and a happier space on the whole. The difference this can then make the home as a whole is staggering, so it is something that is worth thinking about. Let’s take a look and see what you might want to focus on in particular to improve your bathroom.

Colour Choices

As with any kind of interior design process, one of the most important decisions of all is the colors. As long as you are happy with the colors in your bathroom, chances are you find the whole space is pretty enjoyable. But if you don’t like the colors, it can make the experience of being in that room much less enjoyable indeed. So what should you do if you want to improve the colors but you don’t quite know where to begin? Actually, as it turns out, it’s pretty simple. First of all, you need to think about what kind of overall effect you are going for in your bathroom. You can stick to some of the more traditional styles, such as blue and white, or you can go for any kind of new style you might want to try out. Then it’s just a matter of trying out different colors to see what seems to work. You could do this by superimposing it digitally, or just paint a small part where it is hidden. In any case, it’s useful to test these things out beforehand.

Once you are sure on your colors, it’s a simple process to paint the room. But remember that you also need to think about elements other than the walls. For instance, the rim of the bathtub or the sink. If you can introduce a pop of color in these places, you will be making the bathroom work even more efficiently than before in terms of its color. And once you are happy with the colors, you will be happier with the room.

The Tub

Clearly, for something which is so central to the room, you need to make sure that you are especially happy with the bath itself. But it might be that you have inherited a bath from elsewhere, or that you are just not happy with a previous one you installed anymore, and you are thinking about a change of some kind. As it happens, choosing a bathtub can be difficult and take some time, but as long as you understand some of the elements in it you should find it much easier. Take a look at this article on How To Choose A Bath to help you along here.

Once you have chosen the kind of bath you would like, it is then a matter of placing it in the room. This might not be quite as obvious a choice as you might initially think. Although there might seem to be a particular space which you would normally have a bath, you might want to think outside the box a little here, as it can often result in some more interesting looks. For instance, you might end up with a standalone tub, in which case it will almost certainly have a more central position, and at least away from the wall. However you position it, though, you will need to make sure that you are allowing plenty of space for all the other elements in the room as well. If you fail to do that, then the whole appearance can quickly become ruined. As long as you have a bath you love, in many ways the rest will seem to fall into place.

No bathroom is complete without a mirror. But it is hard to know what style of mirror to go for, or even what number of mirrors you should have in your bathroom. The latter depends mostly on the size of the room, of course, and so it varies. But in order to determine what kind of mirror you want, you will find that you need to think about how it will look with all of the surrounding elements. As obvious as that sounds, in practice it is actually surprisingly difficult to make it work well. The only way to really be sure of this is to shop around, to look at different mirrors and consider how they might fit and how they might look. You will probably be most concerned with size, as mirrors create a feeling of space, and how much they do so obviously depends on the size. But beyond that, it’s all about using your imagination and hopefully ending up with something which you feel could work for the room as a whole.

Although you might think there are not many decisions to make here, actually the lighting is one of the most vital parts of the whole. For one thing, it is what ultimately decides how everything else looks, and for that reason alone it deserves plenty of attention and care. You will probably want to introduce as much natural light as you possibly can, so that is the first thing to attend to. But then it’s just a matter of ensuring that your lighting is both attractive and functional, something which you can only be sure of by trying out different styles and to different strengths. You don’t want to over-illuminate, and nor do you want to be literally left in the dark, so it’s all about finding a balance.
